Last Friday night the Fillmore Central Falcons football team eeked out a 6-0 win on the road Friday over Wabasha-Kellogg, dodging a couple bullets along the way.

In the first quarter, W-K got down to the Fillmore Central 14 yard line, before the "southern" Falcons defense turned them back, holding them on fourth-and-16 on the FC 20. In the second quarter Wabasha-Kellogg got down to the Fillmore Central six yard line, before the defense came through again.

Fillmore Central never really threatened to score in the first half, but did run off 11 plays on its first possession of the game.

Wabasha-Kellogg received the second half kickoff, after a scoreless first half. Preparing for a punt on its own 49-yard line, Fillmore Central's defensive pressure blocked the punt and then recovered the ball on the W-K 17 yard line. Three plays, and a penalty later, Brandon Gatzke scored on a one yard plunge, giving Fillmore Central a 6-0 lead. The extra-point kick by Collin Bennett was no good, and the score remained 6-0. As it turned out, that's all the scoring Fillmore Central needed.

On the next W-K possession, Brandon Breitsprecher came up with an interception, giving FC the ball near mid-field. The Falcons couldn't move the ball and ended up punting to W-K. W-K followed suit with a punt to FC, which gave it right back after the team couldn't move the ball either.

The Fillmore Central defense stepped up again, recovering a fumble on the FC 24 yard line. Coming up with the take-away was senior Andy Coyle. Fillmore Central then put together a series of plays that ate up most of the fourth period clock. Fillmore Central ran 14 plays, consuming over eight minutes, with Devon Block carrying the ball on 11 of the 14 plays.

Wabasha-Kellogg got the ball back with less than 22 seconds left on the clock, but couldn't get anything going when time expired.

Devon Block was the Fillmore Central workhorse, carrying the ball 27 times for a net 105 yards. Dan Gatzke had eight carries for 61 yards and a score. McKinnen Stone carried five times for 22 yards and quarterback Brandon Breitsprecher had one carry for -4 yards.

Breitsprecher passed six times, completing two for 10 yards. Dan Gatzke and Andrew Coyle each had one reception.

Defensively, McKinnen Stone had five solo tackles and one assist to lead the team. Coming up with four solo tackles each were Chris Collett and Nick Ebner. Brandon Breitsprecher, Devon Block, Andy Coyle, Jake Ristau and Dalton Mart each had three solo tackles. Take-aways went to Coyle (fumble) and Breitsprecher (int.).

Devon Block punted five times for FC, averaging 22.0 yards per kick. Collin Bennett kicked off for the team.

Friday night the Falcons (1-0) will host Lewiston-Altura (2-0). The Cardinals beat Rushford-Peterson last week, 20-6.
