Last week the Fillmore Central girls lost to Chatfield 62-16 on Tuesday, then bounced back with a 61-58 win on Thursday over Wabasha-Kellogg.

The gals were missing three starters in the loss to the Gophers: Morgan Malley, Jordan O'Connor and Sammi Bakke. In the win over W-K, both Malley and O'Connor were back at "pretty much" full strength, while Bakke saw limited action.

In the big loss to Chatfield, all of Fillmore Central's scoring was done by players that are sophomore age or younger: Larissa Armstrong (ninth grade ) 6, Gabrielle Shupe (ninth) 1, Kenzie Broadwater (eighth) 4, Kaitlynn Aug (10th) 3, and Kendyl Bennett (eighth) 2. Add to that "youth corps" Leah Scheevel (10th), who was co-leader in rebounds (5) and tops in steals with four. Broadwater also had five rebounds.

"Having one starter out is one thing, but not having three of your normal starters really puts us at a disadvantage quickly," said coach Sarah Tollefsrud. "I do give credit to our younger players for stepping up. It is giving them experience at a high level and they are learning each day. I was proud of our girls for hanging in there and not giving up."

Things were much better against Wabasha-Kellogg. Sure, W-K isn't at the same playing level as Chatfield, but having starters back in the line-up really makes a difference.

One of those returning to the line-up, Morgan Malley, made her presence known immediately. Malley came back with a tremendous scoring game, hitting 14 of her 25 shots, including four of eight from three-point range, finishing the game with 34 points. Leah Scheevel added nine points and pulled down a team, and game, high 15 rebounds. Jordan O'Connor was also back playing and scored eight points and gathered in five rebounds. Kenzie Broadwater chipped in with seven points and dished out five assists. Kaitlynn Aug had a bucket for two points and blocked three shots. Larissa Armstrong was one for two at the line for one point.

Tuesday's game with Lewiston-Altura was postponed. No date set at the time of this writing. Thursday the girls host Spring Grove and Friday they will be entertaining Dover-Eyota.
