At the season opener for both schools, the Mabel-Canton girls softball team defeated the Wolverines of Glenville-Emmons, 17-3, on Monday, April 8. In a rarity for this season of postponements, the field conditions in Glenville were great, M-C Coach Kari Tweeten reported, with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 50s.

The Cougars scored in each inning except one in the 10-run rule shortened game.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the first, M-C erupted for seven in the second, helped along by some walks, singles from (winning pitcher) Kristina Mengis, Lydia Geving and Ashley Dahl, and an RBI double by Abby Hanson.

Geving went 4 for 4 in the five-inning massacre, smacking RBI singles in each of her first three plate appearances. She then opened the fifth with a triple.

Lead-off batter Hannah Nolte hit 3 for 3 and scored three runs. Dahl wound up going 2 for 4 while driving in 3 runs. Coranda Vickerman also scored an RBI double.

Mabel-Canton did not commit an error. Mengis allowed only 6 hits, striking out 5 while walking 4.

G-E rallied in the fourth, clustering half of their hits (including both doubles) and all of their runs in a single frame.

M-C finished the off the fifth with 6 more runs, featuring Geving's triple, Vickerman's 2-RBI double, and singles from Nolte, Dahl and Taylor Adkins. When G-E could not cut the margin to less than 10 in the bottom of the inning, the 10-run rule ended the contest.
