The Cougars began the New Year with a win, topping the Hope Lutheran Patriots 55-50.

Hunter Johnson led Mabel-Canton with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. The junior guard hit three of seven from beyond the arc, three of eight from two-point territory. Classmate Noah Manning also canned a pair of treys on the way to a 15-point game, adding a team-high eight rebounds, along with six assists and three steals. Justin Ward came off the bench with seven points, three steals, a blocked shot and a pair of rebounds. Starting forward Mac Nelson contributed six points and two rebounds. Donnie Lind had five points and two assists.

Sophomore forward Andrew Fratzke led Hope with 23 points. Jason Klug and Brady Meyer contributed 11 each.

Mabel-Canton led 24-20 at the half. As a team, the Cougars hit 56 percent (9 of 16) from beyond the arc, but only 28 percent from two-point range. The Patriots were 38 percent from both distances, as well as from the charity stripe.

Free throws contributed about the same to both team tallies (20 for M-C and 18 for HL). The Patriots held a small (34-29) edge on the boards, and turned the ball over 18 times during the course of the game. Mabel-Canton handled the ball well, with only 10 turnovers. The Cougars were helped by quick hands, out-stealing HL 10-5.

Mabel-Canton at Grand Meadow

On Friday Mabel-Canton took to the road, heading west. The contest was won by the Superlarks of Grand Meadow, 58-36.

Although the Cougars trailed the home team by just one point at the break, some accurate shooting by Grand Meadow in the second period allowed the 'Larks to soar. Mabel-Canton wound up being out-scored 36 to 15 in the second half. For the night, M-C scored on only 27 percent of their attempts from the field while GM hit the net 46 percent of the time. Shooting fouls were few. The Cougars had only two attempts from the charity stripe during the game, scoring one point. GM went to the line eight times and hit two.

Ward was the only Cougar in double figures, scoring 11 and snagging 4 rebounds. That included hitting three of four trey tries. Johnson scored 9 points and grabbed five rebounds. Manning scored eight points, had 6 rebounds and dished six assists. Collin O'Bieglo added four points.

Senior guard Andrew Riedemann led the Superlarks with 19 points, hitting four of six from beyond the arc. Senior forward Bryce Benson grabbed 13 rebounds out of a team total of 37. Mabel-Canton got 29 rebounds overall.

Up next

The Cougars were scheduled to host a make-up game with Rochester Home School on Jan. 8. On Jan. 11, they will travel to Lyle/Pacelli. Thursday, Jan. 17, finds Mabel-Canton playing at Houston. The team travels to LeRoy-Ostrander on Jan. 18.
