Mabel-Canton traveled to the 28th annual Lewiston Auto/Warrior Club Holiday Basketball Tournament at Winona State on Dec. 26 and Dec. 28, taking on Cotter in the first match, and Cochrane-Fountain City (CFC) from Wisconsin in the second.
Mabel-Canton versus Cotter
Class AA Cotter defeated M-C in opening round action at McCown Gymnasium, 60-32.
Utilizing a nine-player rotation, the Ramblers were able to maintain high-energy, full-court defensive pressure on the Cougars. The result was 14 M-C turnovers in the first half alone, helping the Three Rivers Conference team to a 31-10 halftime margin.
"We feel one of our biggest strengths is our depth," Cotter coach Pat Bowlin told the Winona Daily News.
Lydia Geving scored nine points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked a shot for the Cougars. Sara Lind had eight points, five rebounds and a block. Carly McCabe added five points and three rebounds. Connor Benson came in for four points, a board and an assist. Coranda Vickerman had six assists, two points and a rebound. Abby Hanson scored two points and hauled in two rebounds. Courtney Graves had two points and a rebound. Hannah Nolte contributed five rebounds and two steals.
Julia Charron had an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Ramblers. Hannah Spiten added 14 points.
Mabel-Canton versus Cochrane-Fountain City
Two days later, M-C took on the Lady Pirates, who squeaked by the Cougars 44-43.
M-C led 19-16 at the half and it was nip and tuck to the end.
With just 12 seconds to play, Pirate sophomore Kerrigan Lyga tied the game at 43 by hitting two clutch free-throws. Another trip to the line with only seconds left gave CFC freshman Rylee Gabel the chance to give CFC the lead, which she did. Lyga's second shot bounced out and the clock expired while players fought for the rebound.
Geving scored 23 points. Lind contributed nine, while Nolte and Vickerman had four apiece, Hanson scored two and McCabe scored one. Official stats for rebounds, steals and assists were not available as this issue went to press.
For the Pirates, Nicole Hunger netted 16 points, Savannah Sixty and Lyga had eight points each.
On Friday, Jan. 3, M-C travels to Hope Lutheran for a double-header. The following Thursday, the Cougars are scheduled to play in Spring Grove. Rushford-Peterson visits Mabel on Jan. 10.
