The Mabel-Canton girls' basketball team charged into the 2013-14 season with three straight wins last week. The Cougars hosted Riceville, Iowa, on Monday, Schaeffer Academy on Tuesday and Glenville-Emmons on Friday.

Mabel-Canton vs. Riceville

Riceville had some difficulty handling the ball in the first period and trailed 37-7 at the half. The Cougars picked up where they left off when play resumed, sending in the bench while cruising to a 57-32 win.

Lydia Geving led M-C with 18 points, five rebounds and five steals. Classmate Carly McCabe contributed 10 points, three assists, three steals and two rebounds. Senior Sara Lind poured in nine points, grabbed eight rebounds, made four blocks and had three steals. Freshman Coranda Vickerman came through with six points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Vickerman, Geving and McCabe hit two treys each. As a team, the Cougars sank 38 percent (6 of 16) from beyond the arc.

Lind recorded three assists with only one turnover. McCabe also had more assists than turnovers.

Taylor Uthe and Katie Keeling led the Wildcats with six points each. Mckayla Heczko added five.

Mabel-Canton vs. Schaeffer Academy

A lopsided win (51-20) over Southeast Conference opponent Schaeffer Academy took place the following night.

Lind led all scorers with 15 points. She also snagged eight rebounds and lifted three steals. McCabe added 13 points, nine rebounds and six steals to team totals. Geving poured in 10 points, dished out eight assists with no turnovers, got five rebounds, and three steals. Danielle Graves and Vickerman hit treys for three points each.

Lions Carol Cheng, Christina Westberg, Mara Wilson and Hannah Carter scored four points apiece.

Mabel-Canton vs. Glenville-Emmons

The Cougars sprinted out to a 38-9 lead in the first half, then coasted to a 67-19 win during its game with Glenville-Emmons on Friday night.

Geving bucketed 21 points. She also came through with seven boards, three steals, three assists and a block. Lind scored 11, came down with nine rebounds and passed for three assists. Vickerman had 10 points, seven steals, five assists and two rebounds. McCabe added eight points, four assists, two steals and two rebounds.

Senior guard Abby Hanson had seven points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Freshman center Courtney Graves added six points and four rebounds. Junior guard Danielle Graves had two points, two rebounds. Sophomore guard Connor Benson came in for two points and three steals.

Jaclyn Weitzel had six points and four rebounds for the Wolverines. Bre Lundmark scored four points. Payton Wangen scored two points, four rebounds, one steal and passed for two assists.

The Cougars traveled to Lyle/Pacelli on Monday, Dec. 9. The following evening they hosted La Crescent of the Hiawatha Valley League. Houston visits Mabel on Tuesday, Dec. 17. On the Friday, Dec. 20, LeRoy-Ostrander is set to come to town.
