On Tuesday, Aug. 28, LeRoy-Ostrander visited Mabel-Canton for the inaugural game of both teams' 2012 volleyball season. The Cardinals played a solid match against the Cougars, who came into the contest ranked eighth in the state. They nevertheless fell to the home team in straight sets, 25-14, 25-17, 25-15.

"We knew entering the game they would have four returning players including one of the best liberos in the area in Jessica Jennings," Mabel-Canton coach Lonnie Morken stated. "They also had their setter returning and one of their middles so we knew that they would still be very competitive."

Citing good serve receiving and good defense by his team, Morken said the match was a great way to get the "first game jitters" out of his squad. The Cougars responded well to some hard-hit kill shots, but still need to work a bit on "the off speed stuff," he added.

Junior outside hitter Belle Sand finished with 16 digs, while classmate Carly McCabe (at setter) had 13. Junior libero Christine Lee finished with nine.

"We primarily have three passers, Lydia Geving, Christine Lee and Belle Sand," Morken noted. "We feel very confident in them. Christine has improved a great deal. In fact against L-O she received 17 serves and passed at a 2.35 rate which is phenomenal."

The Cougars finished with nine missed serves and 10 aces. Lee placed 26 of 28 serves in play, finishing with 21 points. Mounting a balanced hitting attack, M-C had six players with five or more kills. Seniors Kristina Mengis and Christine Welscher combined for 16 kills with only one error.
