M-C 001 000 0 - 1 3 4
M-C saw the regular season close with a 5-1 home loss to Houston.
The Hurricanes tallied 11 hits while the Cougars managed only three - all in different innings - off Houston hurler Mason Drake.
Drake walked only three batters and was backed up by errorless defense.
M-C scored in the third inning after a lead-off walk to Collin O'Bieglo and a single from Riley Marlow. O'Bieglo came home on the second of two ground-outs. No other Cougars would get past second base. The other hits were a two-out double by Bryce Michels in the fourth and a single by Keyser Wenthold in the fifth.
Brett Hoskins and Tyler Hoskins each had three hits for the visitors. But the big blow was a two-out, bases-loaded, three-RBI double by Taylor Johnston. That put Houston up 3-0 in the first inning and would prove to be all the Hurricanes would need.
Houston stranded 12 runners on base, but twice the Hurricanes would put two hits together to add single runs in the third and sixth innings.
Scheduled to meet four times in conference action, this was the third and final SEC game that the weather allowed. Houston won two of those three league games with the visiting team winning each time. The season series, however, was even as the Cougars had defeated Houston at the Stewartville Tournament.
M-C (8-7 overall) finished in second place with 6-5 SEC record, one game ahead of third-place Houston (5-11, 5-6 SEC). This regular-season finale came just after M-C had received the number four sub-section seed while Houston snagged the number seven spot.

FC/L 221 020 5 - 12 11 3
M-C 030 000 3 - 6 9 6
The baseball season ended last Thursday for number four seed M-C in the sub-section opener with a 12-6 loss to number five seed Fillmore Central/Lanesboro.
Senior Collin O'Bieglo, KFIL-Radio Co-Player of the Game for M-C, took the pitching loss despite striking out 12, walking only four and giving up only four earned runs.
FC/L had 11 hits and benefited from six Cougar errors.
The Falcons scored two unearned runs in the first inning and added two more unearned tallies in the second. But the Cougars came right back in the bottom of the innings with three runs on four hits, including three doubles from Weston Whalen, O'Bieglo and Keyser Wenthold.
But that 4-3 deficit would widen while the Cougars went scoreless in their next four at-bats. M-C was still within striking range, trailing 7-3, going into the final seventh inning, then the Falcons ripped off six of their 11 total hits to score five times.
Down 12-3, the Cougars answered with three runs of their own and had the bases loaded with only one out. But winning pitcher Josh Jones (7K, 4W) put down the revolt with a strikeout and a ground out.
Seven different Cougars had base hits with four doubles, but eight Falcons hit safely as FC/L totaled an 11-to-9 edge in hits.
Sharing M-C Player of the Game honors was senior catcher Noah Manning, who batted two-for-four with a double and a stolen base. Wenthold went two-for-three with a double, an RBI and two stolen bases.
KFIL Falcons of the Game were junior Nick Mensink (who hit three-for-three with a double) and freshman designated hitter Collin Scott who batted two-for-three with a double while driving in four runs.
The next door neighbors were meeting for the first time in seven seasons. The Falcons won 4-2 the last time in 2007. They last met in the play-offs in 2005 when eventual sub-section runner-up M-C defeated FC/L 12-2 in the opening round.
M-C closed the 2014 season at 8-8 while FC/L took a 4-12 record into the 1A East semi-finals where it becomes double elimination. The Falcons then fell to 11-0 to top seed Wabasha-Kellogg before being eliminated 12-2 by number-two seed Chatfield.
