This past week, Aug. 5 to 10, 300 of the finest high school band and orchestra musicians met at the annual Minnesota Music Educators Association All-State Camps on the campus of the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Concordia College in Moorhead. Among these elite performers were Fillmore Central percussionists, Nicholas Powell, son of Lane and Jessie Powell of Harmony, and Morgan Malley, daughter of Travis and Melissa Malley of Harmony. Nick participated in the All-State Symphonic Band while Morgan performed with the All-State Orchestra.
These two students earned the right to participate in the All-State groups as a result of a stringent audition process held throughout the state this past March. This is Morgan's first appearance in the All-State groups and Nick's second time playing in the All-State bands! Minnesota high school musicians are only offered two opportunities to audition for these groups at the end of their sophomore and junior years. It is the highest honor that a high school musician can receive in the state of Minnesota.
The All-State Jazz band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Orchestra rehearsed as full ensembles and in sectionals for approximately eight hours per day during the week-long camp. The week culminated with concerts at Duluth East High School and Concordia College this past Saturday. All of the All-State ensembles will reconvene this coming February for a special performance at the MMEA Mid-Winter Clinic in downtown Minneapolis and a performance at the prestigious Orchestra Hall.
Band director Lane Powell extended his gratitude to the Fillmore Central School District for its financial assistance in helping to provide this wonderful opportunity for these two talented young people.
