Mabel-Canton eighth grader Miranda Cox said that spelling is "something she has always been good at."
That is why it is no surprise that she took fourth place in one of the two semi-final regional spelling bees held on Tuesday, Feb. 11. A total of 78 students participated between the two contests.
Cox is advancing to the final regional spelling bee on Feb. 25 in Rochester, coordinated by Southeast Service Cooperative.
At the final regional spelling bee, Cox will compete against the six top spellers from both of the semi-final spelling bees.
The grand champion of the final spelling bee on Feb. 25 will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., on May 25 to 31.
Cox said the trip to Washington is a trip she "most definitely" plans to aim toward.
Fillmore Central's Mikayla Vande Zande, also an eighth grader, finished as a first alternate to the spelling bee in the opposite bracket.
