Again this year, Rushford-Peterson has earned the number-one seed in the boys' subsection tourney. Spring Grove nabbed the number-two spot, followed by Fillmore Central in third and Lanesboro in fourth. Those four will host quarterfinal games today (Thursday).

Both R-P (at #8) and Spring Grove (at #10) are state-ranked programs. Fillmore Central lost twice to R-P this season, and once to Spring Grove. Lanesboro lost to all three seeds above them during the regular season but have a decent record in sub-section play, having won their first tournament match for nine years running. Mabel-Canton is seeded at number six, their highest ranking in three years. They are winless vs. the teams seeded above them this year, but undefeated against those ranked below. The Cougars have won only one sub-section game in the last four years.

In 2010 and 2011, R-P won Subsection 1A. They took the section championship in 2010, finishing fourth in the state tourney. In 2011, the Trojans lost to Goodhue in the section championship.

Since Rushford and Peterson consolidated in 1990, R-P has won 16 of 22 subsection basketball tournaments. In the last 15 years, R-P has compiled a dominating 41-3 record in subsection games.

Two of the three that beat the Trojans during that span are Spring Grove, which won the 2008 subsection final versus R-P, and also knocked them out in the semi-finals in 2002, and Fillmore Central, which defeated them in the 2009 finals.

In 2008, Spring Grove lost to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in the section championship. Fillmore Central lost in the section final in 2009 to Bethlehem Academy. The last subsection champ to win the state championship was R-P, in 2006.
