The Lanesboro girls' basketball team opened play at the Dover-Eyota tourney on Friday, Nov. 23. Their opponent was Class AA Kasson-Mantorville of the Hiawatha Valley League, and the Burros lost 80-20.
"Unfortunately we did not play very well," first-year coach Kelly McMillen reported, "but I was happy with the girls' intensity throughout the game. Kasson is so well coached and very long and athletic; we were just over matched from the start."
McMillen noted that the game was an opportunity to see what the Burros need to work on by going up against a solid opponent from a larger class school.
Senior forward Alisa Warnes scored 10 for Lanesboro, while junior forward Kaia Hongerholt contributed 4. Center Erin Schlotthauer of K-M led all scorers with 22. The margin was 40-10 at the half. The KoMets were 30 of 44 from the field, while LHS was 5 of 15.
The next day the Burros took on LeRoy-Ostrander for third place, defeating the Cardinals 39-35. "L-O is always a tough matchup for us because they are very well coached and athletic," McMillen said. "We are fairly evenly matched and I think a couple shots fell our way that allowed us to come away with a victory."
Sophomore center Olivia Haug led the Burros with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Becca Bunne led L-O and was the top scorer with 14.
Dover-Eyota defeated K-M 68-60 in the final.
For the Burros, a Nov. 27 home game against Mabel-Canton was next on the schedule, followed by a Dec. 7 game at Grand Meadow.
