Matt Schrupp led the Winona Cotter/Hope Lutheran cross country team to victory at the "Crazy Buffalo" meet in La Crescent last Thursday. For the ladies, Dover-Eyota won team honors, led by Lexi Hasleiet, even though Bailey Oettel and Lizzy Schmida of La Crosse Logan finished 1-2 in the varsity/JV 4K.

The day featured moderate humidity, calm winds, and temperatures in the low 80s. There were nine boys' programs on hand, and 10 ladies' teams.

Lanesboro runners took to the course for the second time in as many years, which is located on Pine Creek Golf Course. It features one steep hill about 40 meters long. Now that Fillmore Central has rejoined the Lanesboro-hosted cross country program, FC athletes got to find out what the venue offers as well.

In the varsity/JV race, the L/FC girls were led by freshman Kiera Olson, who finished the course in 16:26, good enough for fifth place. Teammate Leah Ruen, also a freshman, took 15th, while senior Heather Boyum finished 42nd. Junior Cami Jones took 65th. With only four female varsity entrants, L/FC was one runner short of the five needed to post a team score.

The boys from L/FC took seventh place as a team. They were led by junior Travis Troendle, who took 15th place. Sophomore Nathan Eversole finished in 34th position, followed by freshman Michael Harrison (38th), freshman Ben Gjere (45th), and freshman Casey Olson (49th). Treyton Chiglo, Layton Howerton, William Nolan, and Mathew Kiehne also completed the 4800-meter course.

In the girl's junior high race, L/FC runners Jaime Rein and Emily Snyder finished seventh and 10th, respectively. Aaron Eversole (ninth place) led the L/FC boys' team across the line. He was joined by teammates Travis Sexton, Daniel Erickson, Jay Bissen, and Joey Lange. That was enough runners to earn L/FC fourth place in team standings. La Crescent won the boys' team title, while Dover-Eyota earned the top spot in the girl's event.

L/FC coach Ellen Cullen noted that next week's Dover-Eyota Invitational will be the boys' first full-length 5k race of the season. That event took place on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Eyota Elementary School. One week later, L/FC runners will travel to the Lake City Invitational at Camp Hok-se-la.
