A Winter Wilder run is set to take place on Saturday, Jan. 12, on gravel roads near Spring Valley.

Sponsored by the same people that put on the Wilder foot races last spring in conjunction with the Almanzo bicycle races, the plan is to run the 2012 version of the Perley 30k beginning at 9 a.m. Teams of runners are encouraged to participate.

The event is free, but participants need to send Dustin Harford a postcard by Dec. 1 to get in on the fun. Mail postcards to Dustin Harford at 124 8th St. East, Hastings, MN 55033.

This is a self-supported event on open gravel roads in winter, and there will not be anyone out there to offer runners water, food and other support this time around so make sure you come prepared, advised Harford. The distance is about 19 miles.

"We like this to be more of a team event, but you are allowed to run on your own," said Harford. "Find a running pal or team up to share the experience and to share a beverage with afterwards. After all, the more the merrier!"

The Wilder foot races crew will be out on the roads with the other runners for this event, something they are looking forward to as they don't get a chance to run the event in the spring when they are busy organizing it.

The winter run will allow them "to get a chance to run with you and hopefully get to know some of you better," said Harford. He labels this a "casual" event that encourages new and experienced Wilder runners to get out and run in winter.
