Fillmore Central beat Hope Lutheran in the first round of the tournament last week, but it wasn't easy.

"It was a tough game for us, for whatever reason," said Fillmore Central head girls basketball coach Sarah Tollefsrud. "Glad we got the win, but wow!"

Kenzie Broadwater had one of her better ballgames of the season, with a team-high 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and five assists. She hit seven of nine free throws, while the rest of the team was just three-for-12. Broadwater finished the regular season just under 50 percent at the charity line, so her performance against Hope Lutheran was very welcome.

Kendyl Bennett and Sammi Bakke were also in double-figures, each with 10. Bennett also pulled down 11 rebounds to record a double-double.

"Offensively, we had a hard time getting anything going," added Tollefsrud. "We also did a lot of standing around. Hope did a nice job at attacking inside and we had some careless mistakes and didn't talk as much as we needed to."

Leah Scheevel fouled out of the game, but contributed nicely when she was in the ballgame. Scheevel finished the game with five points, two-for-four from the field, and six rebounds. Sammi Bakke also had six rebounds and a pair of assists. Morgan Malley was defended well by Hope and finished the night with eight points, three steals and two assists.

Scoring vs Hope Lutheran( fg-ftm/fta-tp): Broadwater 3-7/9-13, Malley 3-0-8, Bennett 4-2/6-10, Scheevel 2-1/3-5, Bakke 5-0/1-10, Kaitlynn Aug 1-0-2, team 18-10/19-48. Three's, 2: Malley(2).

Tuesday night the gals played No. 3 seed Spring Grove. The Lady Falcons played Spring Grove back in January, and beat the Lions, 65-54. Offense and defense need to step up if the second seeded Falcons plan on another win to move into the sub-section finals this Saturday, 11 a.m., at Mayo Civic Auditorium. No. 1 seed Rushford-Peterson and No. 4 seed Mabel-Canton are in the other bracket.
