Fillmore Central's boys basketball team, which will feature good depth and speed, begins a new season Friday at Southland.
Six letter winners, three of them starters, return to guide the Falcons this year. The captains this year are 6-3" senior forward Nick Powell, who averaged 13 points and eight rebounds per game last season, and 5-7" senior guard Logan Masters, who averaged three points and four assists per game. The other returning starter is 6-3" senior guard/forward Quentin Case, who averaged three points per game last season.
The other three returning letter winners, all seniors, are 6-2" guard Carter Rindels, who averaged four points per game last season, 6-2" guard/forward Collin Bennett and 6-5" center Ascher Ostrom.
Other members of the team, all juniors, are 5-11" guard Kiel Larson, 6-0" forward Nick Mensink, 5-11" guard Jordan Miller, 6-3" forward Zach Sorenson, 5-10" guard/forward Bryce Whitehill and 5-11" forward Gatlin Woellert.
Coach Aaron Mensink, who coached B squad last year, notes that the team's speed, athleticism, versatility and depth are strengths this year. He also feels that the team doesn't have a lot of varsity experience as the team lost eight seniors from last year's roster.
The Falcons finished 7-21 overall last season with a 3-17 Three Rivers Conference record.
"Every night you have to be ready to play to get a win in the Three Rivers Conference," said Mensink. "We look to be competitive and continue to create team chemistry and be playing our best basketball in February and March. We will be able to surprise a few teams along the way with our speed and depth.
Mensink feels that Rushford-Peterson and Plainview-Elgin-Millville are the favorites in the Three Rivers Conference this year.
After the game at Southland Friday, the boys play Caledonia at home on Tuesday. They then break for Thanksgiving, returning to action Dec. 3 against Kingsland at home.
