Lanesboro/Fillmore Central fielded enough cross- country runners in a girls varsity race to compete as a team last week. That's the first that's happened since before FC dropped out of the program several years ago.

Coach Ellen Cullen reported that seventh graders Emily Snyder and Jamie Rein competed in their first varsity 4K, giving the team the necessary numbers while placing well in the middle of the field. The Burros were led by Kiera Olson, who charged towards the front once again, finishing seventh (15:56) among 76 entrants.

L/FC finished sixth among 12 varsity teams that competed at the Lake City Invitational at Hok-si-la Community Park. The course is fairly level, located near the shores of Lake Pepin.

The top five scores are tallied for a team total. Joining Olson were Leah Ruen (22nd), Rein (42nd), Snyder (43rd), and Heather Boyum (48th). Cami Jones also competed for L/FC in the varsity race.

The event was won by Madison Overby of Austin, who also led her team to first place as a squad. She completed the course in 15:25. Minnehaha Academy finished second.

"The top two teams were bigger schools that we don't normally see in competition," Cullen noted.

In the boys varsity 5K, Minnehaha took first and second in individual scores, and first as a team. Ephraim Bird won in 15:45, followed by teammate Ethan Wagner. Austin was second in team scoring.

L/FC finished eighth. The Burros were led by Travis Troendle (22nd), Michael Harrison (53rd), Casey Olson (62nd), Matthew Kiehne (64th) and Ben Gjere (65th). Layton Howerton and William Nolan also ran the varsity event for L/FC.

No Burros were clocked as JV entrants. In the junior high 3,200 mixed race, L/FC runner Aaron Eversole took 26th among the boys. Jared Reinhardt took 31st. Travis Sexton, Daniel Erickson, Joey Lange, and Jay Bissen also ran for L/FC. There were no ladies from L/FC in the junior high event, since Snyder and Rein moved up to the varsity distance.

The Burros traveled to the Root River Country Club for the Kingsland Invitational on Sept. 24. One week later, they hit another set of links when the Chatfield Invitational convenes at Chosen Valley Golf Course.
