LHS Girls go 1-1 in tourney

The Lanesboro girls' basketball team ended their season last week after making two appearances in the Section 1A East tournament.
No. 8 Lanesboro vs. No. 9 Schaeffer Academy
Seeded at No. 8 in the 1A East sub-section, Lanesboro opened tournament play by hosting No. 9 Schaeffer Academy on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The Burros defeated the Lions by a score of 58-48.
The first half featured seven tie scores. SA put together a 15-8 run midway through the period, good for a seven point lead, only to be caught in a hurry when the Burros rattled in eight unanswered points. LHS maintained that one-point margin as the teams headed for the locker room at the half, 29-28.
Another 8-0 run in the second half helped Lanesboro to a 51-40 margin, and the Burros never looked back.
Olivia Haug led all scorers with 20 points. Alisa Warnes was close behind with 18, followed by Johanna Bearson with 10. Kirsten Ruen chipped in 8, and Kaia Hongerholt added 2.
Haug completed her double-double by grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds. Ruen totaled 8 boards, followed by Bearson with 7. Warnes had 5 rebounds, while Hongerholt was credited with 4. Heather Boyum had 2 rebounds.
Three Burros recorded a blocked shot: Boyum, Haug, and Bearson.
For the Lions, senior forward Rachel Boegel hit for 13 points while Nicole Arpin scored 11.
No. 8 Lanesboro at No. 1 Rushford-Peterson
Top seed R-P successfully defended their home court two nights later, defeating LHS 73-22 in quarterfinal action.
The Trojans led 40-11 at the half, and used defense to dominate LHS. R-P had also defeated Lanesboro by 60 points on Jan. 31.
Haug and Bearson scored 6 points each for the Burros. Warnes and Ruen hit four points apiece, while Kayla Leiding and Haley Leiding scored one point each.
For the Trojans, Amy Todd led with 16 points. She also had 5 steals. Mariah Mueller added 14, while Kendra Crawford was also in double figures with 11.
R-P went on to defeat Leroy-Ostrander 65-33 in the subsection semifinals, and will meet Spring Grove in the finals on Saturday, March 2. The Lions defeated Grand Meadow 63-41 at Mayo Auditorium immediately following the R-P/L-O game. The East/West championship match is March 7, also at Mayo. Top seeds in the West are No. 1 Bethlehem Academy and No. 2 Goodhue.
