Homecoming week found the Burro volleyball team playing on the road, at home, and finally at a regional tournament.
Lanesboro at Hope Lutheran
Traveling to St. Mary's University gym in Winona Sept. 24, the Burros were defeated by the Patriots in straight sets, 25-17, 25-9, 25-18. No official LHS stats were provided to the Republican-Leader.
Hope's Dakota Ellinghuysen led the Pats with 5 kills, 6 digs, and 5 ace serves. Tiahia Aune added 4 kills, 5 aces, and setter Bailey Bautch provided 16 assists, 9 digs.
Hope Lutheran improved to 6-5 on the season, 4-4 in conference play. LHS fell to 1-6 in SEC contests.
Lanesboro versus Houston
Returning to the friendly confines Sept. 26, LHS crowded the Hurricanes in set one, but came up short 25-20. Sets two (25-12) and three (25-10) also went to the visitors.
The Hurricanes relied on aggressive serving to keep the Burro offense from getting into rhythm, Houston coach Steve Kinstler reported. He credited his own back row with good passing to Houston setter Alexa Horihan, who finished with 26 assists.
LHS senior outside hitter Kaia Hongerholt had 6 kills, 8 digs. Senior outside hitter Madison Ming had 4 kills, 4 digs, and placed 19 of 20 serves in-bounds. Junior middle hitter Alexis Jorgenson served 8 of 8. Senior middle hitter Regan Howerton was credited with 8 blocks.
For the visitors, senior Abbey Loken led with 14 kills, 2 aces. Senior Natalie King added 7 kills and 2 blocks.
"During homecoming week our girls showed a lot of dedication to the improvement of our team," LHS coach Christine Knutson reported. "They keep working together. It's great to see!"
Lanesboro traveled to LeRoy on Saturday, joining seven other teams at the L-O Tournament.
The Burros defeated LeRoy-Ostrander in pool play, 25-19, 25-23. Riceville was next on the LHS agenda. The Wildcats squeaked by Lanesboro 25-22, 25-19. Hope Lutheran and Lanesboro then tied with split sets 25-27, 25-10, but the Patriots were seeded higher due to giving up less points overall.
That placed the Burros in the fifth-sixth place match against another SEC opponent (Grand Meadow). The Superlarks prevailed, 25-17, 25-19.
Alden-Conger defeated Riceville in the championship match. Blooming Prairie took third, defeating Hope Lutheran. Seventh went to L-O, which defeated Glenville-Emmons.
The Burros were scheduled to play a make-up match against Fillmore Central on Sept. 30. On Oct. 1, the team hosts Grand Meadow. Two nights later, Lanesboro travels to Mabel-Canton. Next Tuesday, they travel to Spring Grove.
