Lanesboro/Fillmore Central/Mabel-Canton competed at the Minnesota State High School League's Section 1A Sub-section 1 track and field championships on Thursday, May 23. The venue was Rushford-Peterson High School, and the meet was attended by seven programs.

All first, second, and third place finishers advanced to the section meet, along with those who meet or surpass the 1A standard in time, distance, or height. A third way to qualify is to finish among the top 8 among all 4 subsections.

L/FC/M-C athletes qualified in 9 women's and 6 men's events.

There were two first-place finishes for the Burros. Sophomore Olivia Haug won the discus throw at 109-10. Gabe Decker won the pole vault at 12-04.00. The junior also advanced to section in the 200M dash, setting a new personal record (PR) while taking third in 24.38.

Eighth-grader Kiera Olson took second in the 3200-meter run, achieving a new PR along the way at 12:08.11. She also ran on the girls' 4x800 relay team with Bailey Ruen, Leah Ruen and Vettleson-Trutza as they achieved a "top 8" finish in PR time (10:47.34).

Quentin Case took second in the 300-meter hurdles with a new PR of 42.93. He also qualified with a "top 8" finish in the 110M hurdles (with a new PR of 16.81). In addition, Case qualified on the third-place 4x400 relay team with Zachary Case, Brandon Breitsprecher, and Erik Peterson. That group tied their PR in 3:39.89.

The 4x800 relay squad of Breitsprecher, Nathaniel Harrison, Zachary Case and Peterson took second place with a new PR of 8:40.52.

Eighth-grader Kenzie Broadwater qualified in four events. She took third in both the 100M (new PR 13.30), and 200M dash (new PR 27.67). Broadwater ran on the third-place 4x400 relay with Sara Vettleson-Trutza, Bailey Ruen and Kenndyl Bennett (new PR 4:32.18), and qualified along with Belle Sand in long jump. Both girls beat the standard distance by leaping an identical 15-05.50 (new PRs for both).

Seventh-grader Bailey Ruen set a new PR (5:41.23) while taking third in the 1600M run.

Alisa Warnes advanced by taking third in high jump (4-05.00). She also set a new PR in the 400M (67.69), but will not compete at section in that event.

Other PR's included Damon Zutz at 200M (25.13). Zach Voletz at 1600M (5:01.95) and Isaac Freese in discus (124-09).

Winona Cotter won team bragging rights in boys' team scoring followed by La Crescent and Rushford-Peterson/Houston. L/FC/M-C finished fourth.

In women's events, La Crescent took first place in the 18 scored events. Chatfield finished second, followed by R-P/H. L/FC/M-C took sixth.

The 1A Section championships will be held May 28 and 30 at Paul Giel Field in Winona.
