Rushford driver tears up the track

Another round of competition at Cresco Speedway marked the 10th installment in the 2014 Upper Iowa Speedway series on July 27. Fans enjoyed five classes of action on a mild summer evening.

Rushford's Curt Luhmann won his third straight feature in the Mod Lites division, working his way up from the number eight spot. Second went to Eli Hershberger of Mabel followed by Caledonia's John Griffin. Adam Rogich of Mabel took fifth.
In the four-cylinder Hornets class, Johny Severtson of Wisconsin appeared for the first time this year, winning the points race. He was followed by Arthur Schott of Clermont, Iowa, and Mitch Balik of Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Christopher Schansberg of Caledonia took fourth while Mabel's Breanna Lee finished in sixth place.
Hobby Stocks drew a healthy field, with 17 cars running the feature. Hometown hero Steve Holthaus took the checkered flag, pocketing 100 season points for his efforts. Adam Cline of Decorah, Iowa, took second, while Nathan Lerch of West Union, Iowa, finished third. Harmony's Chad Olson took eighth.
There were 21 entrants in the popular open-wheel B-Mods class. Decorah driver Dan Hovden won the feature followed by Andrew Bleess of Chatfield and Jeremy Schaufenbuel of New Hampton, Iowa. Spring Grove's Casey Knutson took ninth place.
One of the season's best turnouts for Stock Cars lined up for the Sunday night feature, as 20 entrants vied for the lead. Shawn Peter of Mabel won the points race for a second time this season, followed by Lynn Panos of Calmar and Shay Curtin of Cresco. Pete Solum of Spring Grove took sixth while Caledonia driver Jake Lampert finished 15th.
With more than half of the 2014 schedule in the record books, the leader-board shows some drivers pulling away while others are running neck and neck.
Luhmann tops the Mod Lites class with 821 points followed by Hershberger at 765 and Griffin with 711.
Ryan Ayers of Decorah is first among the Hornets with 776, but Schott trails by only 6 points. Jay Mensink of Harmony is third at 704.
Holthaus leads the Hobby class with 769 season points followed by Lerch (743) and Brady Link of Waukon, Iowa, at 742.
Matt Jones, also of Waukon, leads the B-Mods with 804. Dan Hovden is second with 785 while Chris Weigert of New Hampton holds down third with 691.
Mitch Hovden of Decorah leads the big Stocks with 767 points with Kyle Falck of the same hometown only nine points behind. Dan Jones of Waterville, Iowa, is third with 698.
Races return to Decorah on Aug. 2 with hot laps at 6 p.m. and heats beginning at 6:30 p.m. The quarter-mile UIS clay oval track is located at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds, 900 E. Main St., 1.8 miles east of U.S. Hwy 52 on State Route 9 and 1 mile northwest on Montgomery Street.
