Avon Dahl, 74, of rural Decorah, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at the Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse.

She was born Dec. 29, 1938, in Caledonia to Palma Hagen (Robert Fritz). She attended Caledonia schools and on Feb. 16, 1955, she married Maurice Dahl, Sr., at the Burr Oak Lutheran Parsonage. They lived, farmed and raised their 12 children on her husband's home farm in Hesper Township. They recently moved to the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

She was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time with family, flowers, gardening, canning, crafts, and bingo lottery.

She is survived by her husband, Maurice Sr. of Mabel; her children, Maurice, Jr., (Nancy) of Burr Oak, Bruce, Sr., (Doreen) of Decorah, Carol (Sam) Gipple of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joyce (Randy) Halverson of Calmar, Iowa, Mary Beth (Michael) Whalen of Burr Oak, Richard (Kathy) of Burr Oak, Sandy (Willie) Lorch of Decorah, Leslie of Decorah, Jeff (Val) of Elgin, Steve, Sr., of Decorah, Brian (Laurie) of Ossian, Iowa, and Michael (Carri) of Cresco; 53 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; a brother, Burnell (Terri) Nelson of Michigan; a brother, Ardis (Sharon) Nelson of Arizona; brother-in-law, Arnold (Violet) Dahl of Waterloo; sister-in-law, Norma Dahl of Canton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Brianna Dahl in 2006; and a sister, Linda Betts in 2011.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.

Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel assisted the family with arrangements.
