Dorothy F. Lichty, 94, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had been a resident for five days.

Dorothy F. Utzinger was born Jan. 13, 1919, in rural Racine to Arthur and Ina (Warren) Utzinger. She grew up on the family farm near Racine, attended country school and graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1936. She attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, for one year. She was employed as a bookkeeper for a business in Austin.

She was married Aug. 14, 1941, in Spring Valley to Arlo R. Mathison. Following their marriage they lived in Spring Valley. Her husband served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was killed in action overseas on Dec. 25, 1944, when his transport ship was hit in the English Channel.

She was married March 17, 1946, in St. Cloud to Arno W. Sack. They lived in rural Paynesville, Minn., where they farmed. The Sack family moved to Spring Valley in 1955 where Dorothy was employed as a bookkeeper for Spring Valley Creamery for 14 years. Mr. Sack worked as a mechanic. He died Oct. 9, 1972.

Dorothy moved to Rochester, where she was employed as a bookkeeper for several Rochester businesses.

She was married on Sept. 9, 1978, to Wallace R. Lichty. They lived in Cherry Grove. After retiring, they enjoyed going to Arizona in the winter. Mr. Lichty died Jan. 15, 1995.

She moved to Stewartville in 2003. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, everywhere she lived. She was active in the churches' women's circles, taught Sunday school, played piano and sang in church choirs and was recently a member of the Stewartville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing cards, reading, playing and listening to music, golfing, and bowling. She enjoyed time spent with her friends and family, especially all of her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Charles Mathison (Betty McMahon) of Phoenix, Robin (Lon) Moon of Marshall, Minn., Karen (Darrell) Vreeman of Ostrander, Deanna (David) Von Lichty of Stewartville, Marlene Sack (Judith Kennison) of Ithaca, N.Y.; stepsons Harlan Lichty of Hastings, Minn., and Mark (Mary) Lichty of Elgin; eight grandchildren, Todd Mathison, Lisa Dortch, Joanna (Matthew) McKenzie, Sarah (Russell) Svenningsen, Lori (Todd) Hubka, Lynette Vreeman, Jason (April) Lichty, and Matthew Lichty (Karen Sleva); five stepgrandchildren , Darren (Kathy) Lichty, Chris Lichty, Chad Lichty, Tory (Andrew) Larson, and Kelli Lichty; 18 great-grandchildren ; two stepgreat-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; and sisters, Marcella Dufty of Phoenix and Marilyn (Mark) Warren of Stewartville.

She was preceded in death by three husbands, Arlo R. Mathison, Arno W. Sack, and Wallace R. Lichty, a sister, Helen Sanford, and stepsons, Charlie and Scott Lichty.

The funeral was Monday, April 8, at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville, with the Rev. Wane Souhrada officiating. Burial followed at Racine-Salem Cemetery in rural Racine.

Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville was in charge of arrangements.
