Duane P. Vande Zande, 80, of Preston, died at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester on Monday, Aug. 5, where he had been a patient for six days.

Duane Pierce Vande Zande was born on Aug. 26, 1932, in rural Preston to Clarence and Ingred (Yaste) Vande Zande. He attended Forestville and Oak Grove Country Schools. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. He returned to the family farm in rural Preston and continued farming until his hospitalization.

He enjoyed family get-togethers and visiting about his time in the Army. He also loved going to movies in Harmony.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Kenneth Reed of La Crosse; nieces, Sandra Manion of Fountain and Deborah Lind of Winona; nephews, Steven Schlick of Preston, Perry Reed of Bismark, N.D., and Brian Reed of Brownsville, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elenor J. Schlick and Verna M. Reed; and one brother-in-law, Merton P. Schlick.

A memorial service was held last Friday at Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston with the Rev. Beth Perez officiating. Following the service his body was cremated. Burial of his ashes will take place on a later date.
