Gary S. Van de Mark, 64, of rural Mabel, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at his home.

He was born Nov. 26, 1948, in Spencer, Iowa, to C.C. "Pete" and Geraldine (Henneman) Van de Mark. He attended 13 schools in 12 years and graduated from the Chatfield High School in 1967. He attended the University of Minnesota before joining the work force where he worked as a meat luger, truck driver, owner of a bar in Chatfield, dairy farmer and bridge worker.

On Oct. 8, 1979, he married Ruth Izer. They later divorced.

On Nov. 30, 1987, he married Marlys "Kit" Underdahl. In 1989, they moved to rural Mabel and started Hy View Feeds.

He was talented with fixing and fabricating machines and using his carpentry skills for the business. He had a knack for caring for animals and used it well in growing their business.

He is survived by his wife, Marlys "Kit," of Mabel; two daughters, Ellen Izer-Van de Mark of Washington, D.C., and Megan Izer-Van de Mark of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Jim of Chatfield; and two sisters, Dorothy (Wayne) Stephas of Chatfield and Judy (Wyatt) Goldsmith of Dover.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Doyle Terrance.

A time of remembrance was held on Monday at the Van de Mark residence in Mabel.

Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel assisted the family with arrangements.
