Loyal P. Brusse, 91, of Harmony, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 4, 2013, at the Gundersen Harmony Care Center.

He was born Oct. 20, 1922, in rural Preston to William and Grace (Berning) Brusse.

He attended Big Spring country school. He served in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre.

He married Bernice Finke on July 24, 1947, in Cherry Grove, where the couple made its home. In 1958, they moved to Harmony, becoming the last owners and operators of the Harmony Hotel. His wife died Dec. 20, 2009.

He drove school bus in the Wykoff and Harmony school districts for 32 years. He was also the bus mechanic for Harmony schools for 26 years.

He was a resident of Heritage Grove in Harmony and then became a resident of Harmony Healthcare in January 2012.

He was a member of the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church, the Preston VFW and the Harmony American Legion. Over the years, he enjoyed woodworking, remodeling and doing crossword puzzles.

He is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Eddie Whalen) Frank of Canton and Debra (Terry) Hanson of Blaine; two granddaughters, Elaine (Jeff) Goettel and Blair Hanson; and four great-grandchildren, Patrick Frank and Aislinn, Gabriel and Eireann Goettel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; two brothers, Calvin and Russell; and a sister, Erna McCoy.

The funeral was held Tuesday at the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Allen Hanson officiating. Burial with military graveside rites followed in the Cherry Grove Cemetery.

The family prefers memorials be given to the Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston assisted the family with arrangements.
