Mary E. "Bette" Barrett, 85, of Harmony, died Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

She was born May 4, 1928, on the family farm in Carimona Township, Fillmore County, the daughter of J. Clifford and Mary (O'Connor) Gossman. She graduated from Preston High School in 1946.

She worked in patient registration at Methodist Hospital in Rochester where she met her future husband, Everett "Don" Barrett. They were married on Nov. 20, 1947, in South Bend, Ind. They first lived in South Bend, Ind., and then in rural Preston for a short time. In the early 1950s they moved to Harmony where they spent the rest of their lives. In February of 2013, she moved to Traditions Assisted Living in Preston.

She was a long time member of Nativity Catholic Church, a volunteer EMT, enjoyed watching football on TV, going to "The Boat," playing Gin Rummy and going dancing with her husband. Her family was very important to her and she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by 10 children: Bill Barrett, Jim Barrett, Pat (Vinson) Mathison, Rosie (Larry) Scrabeck, Peggy Barrett, Kathy (John) Heibel, Jackie (Kip) Johnson, Don (Julie) Barrett, Dave Barrett (Vicky Broughton) and Sandy (Steve) Ristau; a daughter-in-law, Trudy Barrett; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Alice Pott, Bob Gossman, Franny Thene and Vince (Joyce) Gossman; two sister-in-laws, Eleanor Gossman and Marty Gossman; a brother-in-law, Bill Verdick; her husband's sisters, Shirley Crosby, Rosemary Hesser and Nadine Huston.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Everett Donald Barrett; a son, John E. Barrett, Sr.; a daughter-in-law, Marlys Barrett; three brothers and four sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, June 5, at the Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony with the Rev. James VonTobel officiating. Interment was at St. Ligouri Cemetery in rural Preston.
