Roger Johnson, 81, once of Harmony

Roger L. Johnson, 81, of Dodge Center, Minn., formerly of Harmony, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center.
He was born March 23, 1932, on a farm near Harmony. He attended a rural school and graduated from Harmony High School, where he excelled in sports and FFA.
He married Alice Wangen of Lanesboro in 1950. They operated a dairy, beef and hog farm along with a feed business.
He was a member of the Greenfield Lutheran Church, Harmony Golf Club, Farmers Union, Boy Scouts and 4-H. He was a board member of FFA, the Farmers Shipping Association and the Preston Township Board. He was Fillmore County DFL chairman. He served as a delegate and temporary security guard for Hubert. H. Humphrey at the National DFL Convention in Atlantic City, N.J. He was appointed district director for ASCS Federal Farm Programs by Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman in 1962. He became Dodge County executive director for ASCS in 1969. He received several distinguished service and leadership awards on the county, state and national levels.
He and his family moved to Dodge Center in 1970. He was active in many community events, board member of Faith Lutheran Church, Dodge Country Club, Lions Club, Semcac, and Chamber of Commerce. He and a partner developed the Dodge Center Industrial Park. He retired from ASCS in 1992. He became coordinator of Al Corn Ethanol Plant at Claremont. In February of 1997, Midwest Progressive Farmer Magazine named him as "Man of the Year" in service to Minnesota agriculture.
He was a pilot and loved to fly, golf, fish, show horses and work hard.
Survivors include his ex-wife, Alice Johnson; two sons, Chuck (Deb) and Mike (Sheryl) of Dodge Center; a daughter, Kris Johnson of Mantorville; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, a sister and a daughter.
A private family service will be held.
In keeping with his wishes, his body has been donated to the Mayo Clinic to help others.
