Ronald H. Nielsen, 65, of Stewartville, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, following a year-long illness with cancer, at Maple Manor Rehabilitation and Care Center in Rochester, where he had been a resident for 10 days.

Ronald Harvey Nielsen was born on May 24, 1948, in Pleasant Grove Township, Olmsted County, to Verne and Muriel (Bernard) Nielsen. He grew up on the family farm, attended Chatfield schools, graduating from Chatfield in 1966. He attended Austin Vocational School before entering the U.S. Army, serving two years. Following his discharge, he returned to rural Stewartville and was employed at AMPI and at Pulvers Towing, both in Rochester.

He moved to Stewartville in 1989 where he and Mary Honsey began their relationship together and where they have made their home for the past 24 years.

He was employed at Ag Services in Stewartville for a number of years and for the past 10 years has been employed driving a truck for Braaten Construction in Byron, until his health led to his retirement.

He was a past member of Sumner Center United Methodist Church in rural Racine, the Stewartville American Legion and as a boy was a member of the Pleasant Grove Producers 4-H Club. He was a member of RACE (Rochester Area Corvette Enthusiasts) and enjoyed driving and dining with fellow members on weekends in his 2000 Corvette. He enjoyed going camping, following NASCAR and vegetable gardening at his home and on the Nielsen family farm.

Ron is survived by Mary; two daughters, Leah (Jeff) Nielsen-Koster of LeRoy and Krista (Lucas) Peterson of Castle Rock, Colo.; Mary's children, Dave (Jessica) Honsey of Stewartville, Dan (Theresa) Honsey of Hutchinson, Paul (Leah) Honsey of Minneapolis and Robert Honsey of Stewartville; five grandchildren and Mary's six grandchildren; his sister, Nadine Fisher of Harmony and brother, Norman (Donna) Nielsen of Pine Island; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; three brothers, Wesley, Walter and Robert Nielsen and a nephew, Gary Nielsen.

The funeral was held last Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville with the Rev. Wane Souhrada officiating. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.

Arrangements were with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
