Students in Jolene Nelson's fourth grade class at Fillmore Central Elementary in Preston have an important message to share with the public during April, which is Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Fillmore Family Resources invited children of Fillmore County to bring the message home. One way was to record a public service announcement (PSA) about child abuse prevention at KFIL Radio. On Thursday, March 29, the students started their day by walking to the radio station with Dean of Students Chris Mensink.

The students had been practicing the delivery of their 20-second PSA. It will be aired on the radio throughout April.

Fillmore Family Resources representatives stated, "The kids want you to remember to be kind to each other, to help your neighbors and to support young families."

Their message was: "Together we can make a difference in preventing child abuse! Show your children that you love them. Really listen ... with all your attention. Spend time with your children. Talk, play and create a family spirit. Be kind. Solve problems with brainpower not fists. Help others ... be a friend to someone in need. Help parents you know learn how to prevent child abuse and neglect. Volunteer to help a child or family. Brought to you by Fillmore Family Resources and Ms. Nelson's Fillmore Central fourth grade class."

Fillmore Family Resources also sponsored blue Child Abuse Prevention pinwheels that will be handed out by public libraries during story hour in April. The pinwheels are good reminders that childhood is meant to be joyous.

So, in April, remember the children. Listen for their tips on how to build healthy communities. Also, laugh with them as they play with their pinwheels and remember to talk to them about being safe.
