Spring Grove seventh grade athlete Alex Folz won the Minnesota Vikings four-state area Punt, Pass & Kick championship for age 12 and 13 boys at the Metrodome on Dec. 14. The competition area included Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.

On the following day, he and the other age group winners were individually introduced on the field and remained there for the national anthem and the player introductions as the Vikings hosted the Philadelphia Eagles.

The professional players then joined the young athletes in the end zone where the Vikings knelt for their pre-game prayer.

Folz remains in the running for the national championship competition to be held in January in conjunction with one of the NFL playoff games.

Coming from 33 contests throughout the United States, the top four boys in his age group will qualify for national. At press time, 25 of those 33 competitions have reported, and Folz has the best overall score in his age group thus far.

He scored just a fraction over 361 points at Minneapolis with a 48-point cushion over second place Trent Marquart from North Dakota.

His journey began with the local title in Spring Grove conducted by the Spring Grove Athletic Boosters.

He next won the region crown at Mankato but then had to await the results from the four-state area to see which four boys would qualify for the Vikings championship.

At the Metrodome, he placed second in the punting portion with a score below his previous championship form. His pass was as good as usual and good enough to win that phase.

His kick from the tee was also the best in this contest and was also his best ever competition boot.

Noting the Vikings have won each of the four times he has watched in person, Folz feels somewhat like a good luck charm.

He is the first Spring Grove athlete to win the Vikings championship but not the first in his household to compete in the Metrodome. His sister Aly (now a senior at SGHS) was previously a region champion who advanced to Minneapolis.

Alex is the son on Paul and Kristy Folz of Spring Grove.
