The first week of school has just begun. It is an exciting time for students just beginning their school career as well as for the seniors who begin their final year before entering the "real" world and all of the students in between.

The road construction has made getting to and from school a little tricky this fall. Information about this was handed out at the open house at school and is also on the school website, www.springgrove.k12.mn.us. Busing routes have been set up temporarily for in-town students to help with the traffic congestion. Parents should check this information out to help assist with making sure all students arrive and depart from school in a safe manner.

Spring Grove Public School welcomes five new teachers to the staff this year: Chris Deck, Zach Hauser, Megan Miller, Jackie Parker, and Deb Sullivan. Also new to the staff are Sophie Wiste, Emily Hahn, and Jennifer Wedmann.

Wiste is a 2010 Spring Grove High School graduate and will be the reading tutor through the Minnesota Reading Corps.

Hahn is the full-time long-term instrumental music substitute, while Andrea Brownlee is on maternity leave. She currently resides in the Preston area, but her family is from the Harmony-Mabel-Preston area. She has two bachelor of art degrees in vocal performance and French horn performance, along with a master's in education in K-12 vocal and instrumental music. She has been an international music teacher, helping build music programs in Berlin, Germany, Milan, Italy, and Ecuador.

"I am very excited to be here with an established music program," she remarked. "It is an honor to be asked to substitute. As we've already gotten underway with marching and pep band music, it is exciting to hear how well the kids are doing musically and behaviorally. There is a lot going on this fall with marching and pep band and concerts. I am really looking forward to my time here."

Wedmann is a Spring Grove High School alum and is living in rural Spring Grove with her husband, Fred, and daughter, Olivia, who is starting kindergarten and "is super excited to be able to come to 'the big school' with mom," she said.

Wedmann has a biology and secondary education degree. She has been substitute teaching in Spring Grove as well as other area schools and also has done some long-term subbing in Spring Grove. This year, she will be co-teaching family and consumer science with Nancy Gulbranson, teaching child development and interior design.

"I am really excited to be able to teach in this capacity since I have had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Gulbranson as her sub for many years," added Wedmann.
