Friday night brought the official kick off of Syttende Mai with the Blast-Off Banquet at the Fest Building. The event was well attended with a sell-out crowd for the delicious turkey dinner and entertainment by the Spring Grove High School Choir before the annual announcement of the royalty and UffDa Club honorees, which includes: King of the Trolls, Mest Høyaktet Dame (Most Revered Lady), Honorary Norwegian and Business Person of the Year.

The official 2014 royal court are: Little Miss 1st Attendant Allison Frydenlund (daughter of Alan & Amy Frydenlund, sponsored by Newgaard Plumbing & Heating), Little Miss Kenadee Gerard (daughter of Heath Gerard and Tara Gerard, sponsored by Studio 44 Salon) and Little Miss 2nd Attendant Shelby Ryan (daughter of Dustin Ryan & Erin Ryan, sponsored by Viking Electric). Syttende Mai 1st Attendant Abbey Schnell (daughter or Michael & Diane Schnell, sponsored by Doc's Blue Moose), Queen Elizabeth Johnson (daughter of Dan & Kari Alstad, sponsored by Wilmington Mutual Insurance) and 2nd Attendant Carrie Hagen (daughter of Don & Virginia Hagen, sponsored by Kraus Oil, Co.).

Lauren Arneson had been crowned first attendant at the banquet, but was "unable to fulfill the obligations of the position," Syttende Mai Queen Coordinator Michelle Jahnke explained Sunday afternoon.

Once informed of the decision, the Syttende Mai committee moved Abbey Schnell to first attendant and offered the second attendant position to Carrie Hagen who was gracious enough to serve the rest of the term.

Jahnke thanked Hagen for stepping up and agreeing to represent the community of Spring Grove and Syttende Mai at upcoming parades and media events.

Although temperatures were cool on Friday with overcast skies, the rain held off and a great evening ensued for children to participate in carnival rides after the banquet. Saturday saw a slight breeze, which meant a light jacket felt good to watch the parade, but with the sunshine and climbing temperatures, children flocked to the rides that were located at the Fest Grounds.
