LETTER: This Thanksgiving, help feed area seniors
Tuesday, November 06, 2012 4:39 AM
Your home is a warm, comforting place where you celebrate your triumphs, and mourn your losses. The place where you watched those you love grow. As you age, where do you want to live?
At age 95, Gen wants to remain in the modest home where she raised her family, planted her gardens, and created a lifetime of memories.
Gen's best strategy for staying healthy and at home is to eat properly. A well-balanced meal can boost immunity and reduce the risk of stroke, high blood pressure and the complications of diabetes.
By receiving meals through Lutheran Social Service (LSS) of Minnesota Senior Nutrition Programs, seniors like Gen experience the added benefit of regular personal contact with other people, offsetting the isolation aging can bring.
Give the gift of home to Gen and others like her. Your gifts to LSS make it possible to provide Gen with a nutritious meal, as well as peace of mind for her family.
"I can't cook anymore," says Gen. "At my age I can't see very well or read directions for recipes."
"I don't know how we'd manage without them," Bev, her daughter, shares. "It's a great service. Mother is diabetic, so they make sure her meals are low sodium and have things like sugar-free desserts. I really do appreciate what they do."
Thanks to your generosity, Gen knows the blessings of nutritious meals and being able to remain in her own home.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I wonder if you would consider reaching out to other neighbors like Gen?
It only takes $1.60 to help provide a meal for a senior neighbor. A gift of $50 will help provide meals for 30 seniors this Thanksgiving. A gift of $160 will insure that 100 older adults will enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving meal.
Please give generously online at www.lssmn.org or call toll-free at 1-800-582-5260 for the well being of elderly adults and other Minnesotans in need.
