Arlene Priscilla Viegen, 87, of La Crescent, formerly of Spring Grove, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse.
She was born on July 26, 1926, in Taunton, Mass., to Ruby Darling and Arthur William Rugg. She married Herman James Viegen on Dec. 30, 1946. Shortly after they moved to Spring Grove.
Arlene was truly a people person always caring for others. She enjoyed babysitting for various families in the area and later worked with the elderly and infirm at both Pine Grove and Tweeten/Lutheran facilities. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Hospital Auxiliary. Her interests also included gardening, sewing, traveling, writing poetry and short stories. Despite long-term heart problems, Arlene retained her fun-loving, optimistic spirit, and is very much missed by friends and family.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley (Bill) Arens, Sylvia (Kurt) Onstad, and Gloria Viegen; six grandchildren, Kendrick (Maria) Onstad, April (Thahn) Nguyen, Kelly (Tim) Kishel, Elizabeth Bahassou, September Viegen-Jamell and Gregory Viegen-Jamell; three great-grandchildren, Aurora Kishel, Carleton Kishel and Jaxton Onstad.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; her brother, John; and her grandson, David.
Visitation will at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. with an 11 a.m. service and burial at the church cemetery to follow. The Rev. Stephanie Frey will officiate.
Roble Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
