Bernard R. Witt, 88, of Spring Grove and formerly of Hokah, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at Gundersen Health System of La Crosse, Wis.

He was born in Ridgeway, Minn., on Sept. 22, 1924, to William and Susan (Johnston) Witt. He married Charlette Lloyd in July of 1950, and though they divorced, remained close friends.

Bernard was a member of the Gittens Leidel American Legion Post 595 in La Crescent and had proudly served his country in the National Guard.

For most of his life Bernie was an ironworker and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

Survivors include his wife, Charlette Witt of Hokah; five daughters, Carlotta (Mike) Callahan of Mabel, Deborah (Russ) Walhus of Decorah, Iowa, Rebecca (Allen) Hunt of Caledonia, Kim Witt of Hokah, and Bernice (John Penrose) Gastfield of Preston; three sons, Lavern (Jackie Lindhorst) of Hokah, Lynn Witt of Hokah, and Jason (Lori Lloyd) Witt of Waukesha, Wis.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert (Dorothy) Witt of Colfax, Calif.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Harvey Witt; and sisters, Myrtle Smith, Eleanore Frappier, Evelyn O'Neil, Virginia Mrachek, Bernice Witt and Ilene Forschler.

A Mass of Christian Burial was June 15 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hokah. Rev. Pratap Reddy Salibindla officiated. Burial with military honors was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Hokah.
