Brenda Louise Trehus, 62, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at her home in Salida, Colo., with her husband, Jim Hodgson, at her side.

She was born Nov. 7, 1949, in Spring Grove to Carlton and Irene (Wermager, Onsgard) Trehus. She lived in Spring Grove until she graduated from Spring Grove High School in 1967.

After high school, she worked in Minneapolis and Madison, Wis., for three years before moving to Virginia.

In Virginia, she worked for the Fairfax County Dept. of Social Services for several years, owned and operated a small horse ranch for seven years, and was an account representative and manager for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Virginia for more than 10 years.

In 1986, she met Air Force Lt. Col. Jim Hodgson, and they were married Nov. 15, 1990.

In 1990, Brenda and Jim moved to Colorado Springs, where Brenda owned and operated a food service business for two years.

In 1992, she was hired as the first Director of Admissions for the historic Union Printers Home, a private nursing facility, where she worked for the next six years.

In 1998, Brenda and her husband retired and moved to Salida. In 1999, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and began a 13-year battle to fight her disease.

She became a longtime board member of the Chaffee County Mammography Fund, providing mammograms for women in need and purchasing new mammogram equipment for the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center. She organized and participated in many cancer fundraisers in Chaffee County.

She was a volunteer for several Salida nonprofit organizations. She also found time to work part-time for Carlson Travel, providing on-site support at business conventions and meetings in many countries around the world.

Brenda loved travel and adventure. She enjoyed camping, backpacking, canoeing, skiing, snowshoeing, scuba diving, ice fishing and golfing. Most of all, she loved socializing with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Hodgson; one stepson, Michael Hodgson, and grandson, Joshua Hodgson of Salida; brothers, Tom Trehus of Phoenix and Eric Trehus of Maiden Rock, Wis.; sisters, Audrey Jensen of White Bear Lake, Minn., Joycelyn Johnson of Harmony, and Ilya Mulvenna of Caledonia; 14 nieces and nephews; and 19 great-nieces and nephews.
