Carleton Onstad, 87, of Spring Grove

Carleton (Carty) Onstad, 87, of Spring Grove, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at Gundersen Tweeten Care Center in Spring Grove.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1925, on a farm two miles from Spring Grove to Otto and Belle (Gaustad) Onstad. He was delivered at home by Dr. G.M. Helland. Carty was a 1943 Spring Grove High School graduate.
He served in United States Army/Air Force during WWII, where he worked as an airplane mechanic.
On Feb. 15, 1947, Carty married Beulah Ganrud at Trinity Church Parsonage in Spring Grove.
His parents started Onstad Dairy in Spring Grove in 1927. After Otto's death, Carty and Belle continued to operate the dairy until the late 1960s.
He worked at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, as a hospital engineer. Carty also worked at Caledonia Public School for 20 years as head maintenance engineer.
He was a very active member of Spring Grove. He served on the American Legion Post #249 and the Spring Grove Sons of Norway for 69 years. He was a member of Commercial Club and the Spring Grove Fire Department.
Carty was a Veteran of Foreign Wars and a charter member of the Spring Grove Lions Club. He served on the Spring Grove Public School Board.
After retirement, Carty delivered Meals-on-Wheels with Beulah, he also drove people to doctor appointments and assisted with funerals at Roble Funeral Home .
Survivors include his wife, Beulah of Spring Grove; his children, Dennis Onstad of Wayzata, and Kurt (Sylvia) Onstad of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Kendrick (Maria) Onstad of Sartell, Kirstin Aker of Rockford and Kelly (Tim) Kishel of Eveleth; and great-grandchildren, Aurora and Carleton Kishel and Nolan and Rayna Aker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Augusta Kunst and Borghild Onsgard, and his infant great-granddaughter, Emma.
Carty worked with the public. He enjoyed visiting with and helping people, many times staying after an event to make sure everything was done; in his quiet way he accomplished much.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Pastor Stephanie Frey will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post #249 of Spring Grove.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
