Charles "Chuck" Herbst, 28, of La Crosse, Wis., and Soldiers Grove, Wis., died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, in Soldiers Grove surrounded by his family after a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

He was born May 17, 1984, in Viroqua, Wis., to Martin and Kay (Larson) Herbst. He graduated from North Crawford High School in 2002, where he was very active in football and went to state in track and field two years in a row.

He was in his fifth year of apprenticeship as an electrician for IBEW Local No. 14 with Kish and Sons Electric of La Crosse, Wis. He loved his Packers and his Badgers, as well as playing in his fantasy football league.

He loved to travel and play with his nieces and cousins. He also loved to go boating with his brother. He enjoyed playing golf, billiards and beach volleyball. He had that contagious smile that everyone loved.

Survivors include his parents, Martin and Kay Herbst of Soldiers Grove; a brother, Arthur (Kelly) of La Crosse; two sisters, Kimberly (Michael) Rommes of Caledonia, and Jennifer (Richard) Pearce of West Palm Beach, Fla.; his great-grandmother, Julia Larson; four nieces, Madyson, Emma and Nyah Rommes, and Vivian Pearce; his aunts, Debra Larson and Sandy Mason, and Sherrie (Bob) Rainey and families; his cousins, Lance and Jill Mason and Maverick and Marshall Mason; and his uncle, Glenn (Tammy) Herbst and families.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Art and Bertha Larson and Ed and Marie Herbst; and a first cousin, Richard Mason.

Funeral services were held Nov. 9 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Soldiers Grove. Pastor Lori Betz officiated and burial was in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Soldiers Grove.
