R. Dwayne Wolstad, 79, of West Salem, Wis., died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse, Wis.
He was born Feb. 5, 1933, in Fillmore County to Reuben and Doris (Johnson) Wolstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Mabel First Lutheran Church.
A standout athlete, he attended public school in Mabel and graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
On Nov. 26, 1953, Dwayne married childhood schoolmate, Mavis Larson at First Lutheran Church in Decorah.
He had a long, successful career in the insurance industry, holding positions with Liberty Mutual in Rockford, Ill., Ohio Casualty/ West American in Milwaukee, Wis., and Heritage Insurance (now Acuity) in Sheboygan, Wis.
In 1976, Dwayne earned the Field person of the Year Award from the WIMA (now the Professional Insurance Agents of Wisconsin) for dedicated service to his industry, association and community.
In 1978, he became the owner of an independent agency, Wolstad Insurance, in La Crosse. In 1981, he earned his Certified Insurance Counselor designation.
In retirement, Dwayne and Mavis enjoyed many happy years at their homes in West Salem and Sun City Center, Fla. He loved sports, real estate and cars, as well as enjoying an array of beloved family pets.
In 2004, his hometown honored him with the Mabel 20th Century Athletic Hall of Fame Award for his skilled and spirited contributions to the 1951 Wildcats basketball team. He had a great time playing with enthusiastic teammates under coach Don Moore.
Survivors include his wife, Mavis of West Salem; a son, Steven (Ann) Wolstad of West Salem; a daughter, Natalie (Paul) Geyer of Onalaska, Wis.; granddaughters, Emily (Julio) Arnau of Chicago and Allison Geyer and Christen Geyer of Onalaska; and numerous extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Harley and Emma (Mindrum) Larson, his step-mother, Lois (Haagenson) Wolstad; a brother, Roger Wolstad; and an infant grandson, Alexander Geyer, as well as a host of extended family members and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 at First Congregational Church, 2503 Main St., La Crosse. The Rev. Bill Hoglund will officiate. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
