Gerald R. Klein was en route to a new home with his daughter and her husband when doctors in Augusta, Ga., diagnosed Stage 4 cancer, and he died April 5.

Born in 1938 in Caledonia to Fredrick and Violet (Mann) Klein, Jerry attended one-room country schools in Caledonia and Blackhammer Township, and graduated from Spring Grove High School, playing catcher on the baseball team and center on the football team.

He farmed with his grandparents, Reinhold and Hulda (Krueger) Mann on the family homestead in Caledonia that adjoined Reinhold's brother's (Charles') farm. Later he farmed with his grandparents in Spring Grove, and on the adjoining farm of his uncle, Arlyn Mann and aunt, Emma (Onsgard).

After service in the U.S. Army in Korea, he worked at, and eventually retired from, the General Motors plant in Janesville, Wis.

Following retirement he moved to northern Wisconsin to enjoy fishing, but throughout his life his greatest pleasure was to help others. Jerry's absence will leave a hole in many people's lives including his surviving brothers, Dewayne, Robert and Paul.
