Gertrude Minerva (Myhre) Haugstad, 96, of Spring Grove died Monday, May 13, 2013, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wis.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1916, on a farm near Caledonia. The doctor came to the house to deliver her.

She was confirmed at Wilmington Lutheran Church on Nov. 30, 1932. She attended her early school years at Wilmington Townhall in rural Caledonia. She graduated from high school in 1936.

She lived different places in the area, helping people out on farms that she knew needed help. Gert did a lot of babysitting, because she loved children. She had a kind heart, always helping somebody.

Following graduation, she worked as a nanny for a doctor in Minneapolis. She married Enster Haugstad on Sat. Oct. 3, 1942, at Wilmington Lutheran Church.

She worked at Mansfield and Control Data in Spring Grove and for many years at the Spring Grove Hospital.

She enjoyed quilting and sewing carpet rags for making rugs. She was very active in her church and held many different offices.

She never forgot to read her Bible, which was always on the table. She prayed for everybody and will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her children, Gwen (Jon) Allen of Mabel, Carol Arneson (Don Schatz) of Cresco, Iowa, and Lois (Randal) Poshusta of Calmar, Iowa, and Keith (Carolyn) Haugstad of Spring Grove; grandchildren, Jody Roberts, Robert Arneson, Heather (Bryan) Billmyer, Heidi Arneson, Andrea (Mark) Knutson, Jeremy (Kathleen) Poshusta, Aaron Poshusta, Katie (Ryan) Teslow and Emily (Osei Owusu) Haugstad; great-grandchildren, Chris Rogich and Adam Rogich, Kayla Arneson, Brandon Arneson, Taylor Arneson, Christopher Knutson, Jenna Knutson, Calvin Knutson Joshua Knutson, Hudson Poshusta, Allie Billmyer, Ashlyn Billmyer and Tavaris Arneson; surviving siblings of Irene Rostvold, Ruth Ostlie, and brother, Leland Myhre, and sister-in-law, Shirley Myhre.

In addition to her parents, her husband and a son, Byron, she was preceded in death by her sisters Stella, Viola and Lillian and Gilma in infancy, as well as three brothers, Arnold, Oren and Andrew, and five sisters-in-law, and seven brothers-in-law.

Funeral services were May 17 at Wilmington Lutheran Church in rural Spring Grove. Burial was in the Wilmington Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Neal Solomonson officiated.

Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove assisted the family with arrangements.
