Helen R. Meiners, 98, formerly of Brownsville, died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.

She was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Ligonier, Ind., to Guy and Wilma (Growcock) Besse.

On Dec. 29, 1932, she married Henry Schmoll, and they later divorced.

On March 26, 1970, Helen married Marvin Meiners in Decorah, Iowa. Together they farmed in Winnebago Township for many years. Marvin preceded Helen in death on Oct. 8, 2011.

In addition to farming, she was an Avon dealer for 51 years.

Survivors include her three children, Jean Klein of Rochester, Donnie (JoAnne) Schmoll of Newark, Ohio, and Kenny (Shirley) Schmoll of Hendersonville, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Russell "Tubby" (Lorraine) Besse of Brownsville; four step-children, Devoine (Barbara) Meiners of Eitzen, Harley (Joanne) Meiners of Caledonia, Allen (Connie) Meiners of Eitzen and Glenda (James) Miller of Caledonia; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Marvin, Helen was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were April 10 at Christ Community Evangelical Free Church, New Albin, Iowa. Pastor Jim Olsen officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia.
