Hildus Eugene Wold, 96, of Mabel, died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the Green Lea Manor in Mabel.

He was born March 22, 1917, in Mabel to Henry and Emma (Tomerasum) Wold. He lived on the same century-old family farm that was settled by his grandfather, Knute Wold of Norway, in 1852, for 90 years before retiring and moving to Mabel.

On July 10, 1940, Hildus married Jane Erickson at the Lutheran church in Waterloo, Iowa.

Hildus raised purebred Hereford cattle and won many awards for his show cattle. He was a diligent worker, producing the top corn yield in the U.S.A. In 1980, he was awarded a trip to Hawaii.

Hildus and Jane started Wold's Strawberry Farm. The operation was later taken over by their son, Wayne, and his wife, Jan.

Hildus and Jane enjoyed traveling to Europe to see their daughter, Susan, perform in operas in Zurich, Austria and Norway.

Hildus and Jane's son, Barry, served his country in the military in both Korea and Vietnam.

Hildus loved the Bible, especially passages from the Psalms. He would get so enthused about a passage that he would have Jane come and read it.

He served the Federal Bank in Rochester for 25 years as chairman of the board. He also served on the local school board and was recognized for his service there.

Hildus was a very active member in Mabel First Lutheran and later Trinity Lutheran in Spring Grove.

Survivors include his wife, Jane, of Mabel; his children, Wayne (Jan) Wold, Barry Wold, Susan (William) Goodman and Mary Wold; grandchildren, Missy (Brad) Hernandez, Lara (Abe) Mendez, Susy (Erik) Burkness, Eric Wold, Nicole (Josh) Ranzenberger and Amanda (Bill) Dewey; and great-grandchildren, Matthew, Olivia, Madison, Piper, Peyton, Dashua, Tucker, Maverick, Austin, Roman, Ainsley Jane, Jacob and Lily.
