Howard R. Meindl, 80, of Blaine, Minn., died Wednesday, March 14, 2012, in Fairhope, Ala., of a sudden illness.

Howard was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Manitowoc, Wis., to Ralph and Myrtle Meindl. He was in the military, and then went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., with a degree in chemical engineering.

After college, he went to work for General Mills in Minneapolis, where he helped develop many patents. He retired after 30 years, but still wanted to work, so he worked at a movie theater as a projectionist until two years ago when his wife became sick.

Howard and Judy (Burke) Meindl met while they both worked at General Mills. They were married May 8, 1965, at St. Mary's, Hanover (rural Waukon).

Survivors include his children, Debbie Lewis, and her daughter, Sarah, of Ham Lake, Minn., Jeff (Sue) Meindl and their girls, Kaitlyn and Anna, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Thomas Meindl of Blaine.

He is also survived by his brother, Alan (Gail) Meindl of Alabama; his sister, June (Jim) Segerson of Florida; sisters- and brothers-in-law Mary Kay (Dick) Delphey of Lansing, Iowa, Betty (Dean) Staggemeyer of Eitzen, Peggy (Tom) Teff of Dorchester, Iowa, John (Alice) Burke of Lansing, and Pat (Maggie) Burke of Waterloo, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

Funeral services were March 19 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Anoka, Minn., with celebrant Fr. Michael Sloun. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery.
