Lucas John Westby, 29, of Minneapolis, formerly of Mabel, died March 10, 2014, at the Hennepin County Medical Hospital.

He was born Aug. 2, 1984, in Decorah to John and Diane (Tollefson) Westby. He grew up in Mabel, was baptized and confirmed at the Mabel First Lutheran Church, and graduated from the Mabel-Canton High School in 2003.

He worked as a certified nursing assistant in Mabel, Decorah, Chatfield, Rochester and Minneapolis. He enjoyed meeting new friends and hanging out with his old ones. He also loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them, especially attending activities for his niece, nephews and cousins.

Music was his greatest passion and he loved to share his by playing the trumpet and piano. He was most known for his ability to sing. He also loved to dance and was known to break out into a dance almost anywhere.

He gave the best hugs and his infectious smile and laughter could brighten anyone's day. He touched many peoples' lives, whether it was on their journey to recovery, or by showing them how to love themselves as they are. He was never afraid to be himself! 

He is survived by his father, John of Mabel; mother, Diane (Craig) Fishel of Canton; his sister, Dacia (Dean) Sorum of Mabel; his brother, Cole of Mabel; niece and nephews, Kennedy, Carson and Caleb; paternal grandmother, Ruth Westby of Mabel; and stepbrother and stepsister, Chris Newton and Rachel Fishel.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Roman and Arlyne Tollefson and Kenneth Westby.

Funeral services were held last Saturday, March 15, at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel. Burial was in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel.
