Matthew Robert Merzenich, 83, of Caledonia, died Monday, June 3, 2013, at his home.

He was born Dec. 4, 1929, in La Crosse, Wis., to Jack and Josephine (Dittman) Merzenich. He graduated from Loretto High School, Caledonia, in 1948.

Matt served in the U.S. Air Force and the Army, and he was a member of the American Legion Post 191 in Caledonia. He married Patricia Reierson April 18, 1959.

Matt worked at Becker Lumber Company and M&M Construction, Caledonia. He then took over Reierson Clothing Store, well known as "Matt's Clothing" in Caledonia. He also worked at Caledonia Chrysler and the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement.

Matt loved spending time hunting, fishing and golfing. He went on numerous fishing trips with family and friends. He also kept busy with small construction projects for his family.

Matt was an avid Minnesota sports fan and Caledonia Warrior fan, never missing a game.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; daughters, Julie Merzenich and Jackie (Doug) Colsch, both of Caledonia; a son, Jim (Janet) Merzenich, Stoughton, Wis.; grandchildren, Tyler, Meagan, Brett, Cody, Jack and Jessica; great-granddaughter, Tayla Jo; special friend, Christi Schulte of Spring Grove; nieces, Denise and Mary Jo; and a nephew, Jeff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Terry Allen; a son Joseph; and a brother, Eugene "Dew Drop".

A funeral mass was June 8 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif officiated. Military honors followed outside the church following mass.

Per Matt's request, his body was bequeathed to the Department of Anatomy at the Mayo Health System in Rochester.
