Milford Carlton Landsom, 91, of Spring Grove, died Tuesday Jan. 14, 2014, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wis.

He was born in Ray, N.D., on Sept. 26, 1922, to Oscar and Bergit (Berntzen) Landsom.

Milford moved to the Spring Grove/Mabel area at a very young age where he farmed with his father and uncles. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. He returned to Spring Grove where he married the love of his life, Emma Berquam, on March 20, 1948. His lifelong farming with Emma was very respected and it achieved many soil and water conservation awards.

They enjoyed traveling, especially to Norway where they could use their language skills. They also enjoyed camping, dancing, playing cards, and family get-togethers. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and served as commander of Legion Post #249. He was also a member of the Mabel VFW and an active member of Sons of Norway.

Survivors include his wife, Emma, of 65 years; his six children, Ozzie (Sue) of Mabel, Don (Bev), Steve (Peggy), Rick (Shirley), and Deb (Tom Lawson), all of Spring Grove, and Merle (Lynette) of La Crescent; as well as 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, his sister, Genevieve Holty, many nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Lillian Ingvalson, Josephine Rauk and Gladys Wennes and infant son John.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Spring Grove. Burial was in Trinity Church Cemetery. American Legion Post # 249 of Spring Grove provided military rites.
