Milton Staggemeyer, 78, of Eitzen died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care Center, Spring Grove.

He was born March 29, 1935, in Eitzen to Louis H. and Flora (Kumpf) Staggemeyer. Milton was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke's United Church of Christ and attended elementary school, both in Eitzen.

On Feb. 20, 1955, Milton married Evelyn Wenig at St. John's Methodist Church in Dorchester, Iowa.

Milton lived and worked in the Eitzen area his entire life. He worked at the Eitzen Locker for seven years. He and Evelyn then owned and operated Staggemeyer Grocery Store for 39 years and also owned Staggemeyer Insurance Agency for 25 years.

In addition, he was a member of the Eitzen Fire Department for 23 years and served as chief for 11 years. Milton was instrumental in starting the fire district and also the Tri-County Firefighter's Association.

He also served on the Eitzen City Council for 16 years, and he was a charter member of the Eitzen Lion's Club, where he received several awards including the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

Milton was a lifetime member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, and he served on several church committees.

He enjoyed hunting, golfing and playing cards. Milton loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Eitzen; four children, Jean (Greg) Rea of Lansing, Iowa, Bradley (Kristy) Staggemeyer of Carlinville, Ill., Julie (Neal) Luttchens of Caledonia and Mark (Cathy) Staggemeyer of Eitzen; 12 grandchildren, Amy (Mark) Peterson of New Albin, Iowa, Kelly (Jonnie) Oliver of Palmyra, Va., Matt (Becky) Rea of Lansing, Iowa, Michelle Staggemeyer of Onalaska, Wis., Adam (Gayle) Staggemeyer of Auburn, Ill., Rachel Staggemeyer and Dayna Staggemeyer, both Carlinville, Ill., Andy (Jill) Luttchens of Caledonia, Mitch Luttchens of Eitzen, Wayne (Megan) Myhre of St. Charles, Jeremy Myhre (Danielle Dehning) of Caledonia, and Brooke Staggemeyer of Eitzen; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard (Janice) Staggemeyer of Caledonia; a sister-in-law, Grace Staggemeyer of Caledonia; and several nieces and nephews.

Milton was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Staggemeyer; and a brother, Norbert Staggemeyer.

Funeral services were April 13 at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen. Rev. Kent A. Meyer, Ph.D., and Rev. Debra A. Meyer officiated. Burial was in St. Luke's North Cemetery.
