Ole (Obert) H. Haugstad, Jr., 78, of Caledonia, died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, three months after being diagnosed with cancer.

He was born in La Crosse, Wis., on May 4, 1935, to Obert H. Haugstad, Sr. and Eunice "Mae" Smith. He attended Caledonia schools through his sophomore year and graduated from Logan High in La Crosse in 1953. He then joined the Army in June 1954 where he served 32 months in Japan and was honorably discharged in November 1957. In 1958, he met Judy Graf and it was love at first sight. They were married on July 11, 1959, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in La Crosse and were married 54 years.

He attended Molar Barber College in Minneapolis where he received his barber license in 1959. He retired due to illness in August 2013 after 54 years. As a small hometown barber, he made many friends over the years. For over 20 of those years, he and Judy also had a hobby farm where they raised their five children. They moved to town in 1986 where his yard, flowers and fishpond became his new hobbies. He enjoyed sharing the love of his flowers with his grandchildren and a special treat was being able to feed his fish. Over the years, they enjoyed many family vacations and trips to Hawaii. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and American Legion Post 191.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; five children, David (Audrey) Haugstad of Caledonia, Diane (Jerry) Olson of Preston, Debbie Outland of Las Vegas, Nev., Jeff (Mary Jo) Haugstad of Rothchild, Wis., and Sue (Mike) Stemper of Caledonia. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Mandy, Travis and Cody Haugstad; Teri and Daniel (Jenna) Root, and Ashley Olson; Adam (Sophia) Crowson; Samantha, Jacob and Katie Haugstad; and Cara, Justin, Brooke and Amber Stemper; and great-grandchildren are Haven, Aalyiah, Teahya, Tatum and Tannen.

He is survived by four siblings, Sandra Guillaume of Edina, Minn., Elizabeth Wintheiser of Stillwater, Minn., Wanda (Gordy) Bauer of Caledonia and Rick Haugstad of Minnesota; and special sister-in-law, Darlyne Hoscheit, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents, mother and father-in-law, Joe and Mille Graf, brother-in-law Richard Guillaume, special brother-in-law and friend Norman Hoscheit and niece Dawn Guillaume.

Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 5 to 8 p.m. in Holy Family Hall next to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caledonia with a prayer service at 7:30.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's, with the Rev. Matt Fasnacht officiating and with visitation one hour before the service.
